Yesterday, along with my dye and print class, I went outside and used the sun to make prints on fabric. It's actually very simple and quite beautiful, and not nearly as hippie-ish as it may sound.
The fabric is treated with an iron compound and then kept in the dark until you're about to use it. Once you're outside in the sun with all of your printing materials at the ready, pull out your fabric, set it out (rocks make great weights!), place the objects you want prints of on top (the objects act like a resist; I used buttons, scissors and some lace) and wait...four minutes and seemed just right.
Rinse out, then voilà! You've got a some beautifully printed fabric!

cool r u going too make more of this?
i like the scizzors alot. u should make a dress or skirt i think thatd look cool.
Fun fun fun! I wish I was outside printing fabric in the sun, instead of inside inhaling MDF dust and getting mad at plywood.
That's incredible!!! Gosh, I've become so cliché, but I simply have to say "How talented you are!" :-)
By the way, I've inexplicably found myself with a lot of wooden forks from IKEA (just the forks). Any ideas on what to do with them? I'm only a rookie at crafts, but I thought I might as well give it a try...

Amy, yes, I think I will make more of this--I really want to get the silk and make a dress. Right now I'm working on other things, so I'm not sure when I'll get to that, and besides, it's been super rainy and overcast since I printed this.
Kate, we did spend that morning burning paper and fabric; inhaling incense and noxious dye smoke...I'm not sure if that's any better than MDF dust.
Thanks Saigon! You always leave me the sweetest comments! Although honestly, I really didn't do too much for this project--just threw some items on the fabric!
Hmm, wooden forks? I had a hard time thinking of something, but I did find some tutorials like this flower, and this (though the second one doesn't actually use up the fork, but I thought it was neat anyway). I'll try to keep that in the back of my mind though, and I'll let you know if I think of anything!
you are adorable!!
