This afternoon, after school, I stopped at a thrift store with a few friends from school (including Sabrina, who has a car). I picked up a clock, mirror and little storage unit for $17, which is super exciting! I haven't refurbished anything in awhile, and it's something I really enjoy doing. (I rush home every Thursday to check Design*Sponge's before &after column). Needless to say, my finds are all ready primed, waiting for me to pick up some paint to finish them off!
In the meantime, I thought I'd share one of the things I re-did this past summer, but never got around to posting.
Eons ago, when I first got my apartment back in Guelph, (after moving back to Ontario from BC and living with my parents for a bit), I found this hi-fi unit on someone's curb. Actually, right next to this lamp (see? So long ago!)
Anyway, when I found it, it was really worn wood, chipping and unloved. I had big plans for it, and primed it immediately. But then I left it. Used it as a side table. It was white, which at least made it look nicer, but I had other things on to do besides finish it up.
But then during the summer, when I had tons of time on my hands (ie. in between working three jobs), I finally finished it.
I didn't really think about all the shadows when I opened the curtains before taking pictures, but it's such a lovely day outside!
I re-wired the speakers, so now it actually functions as a sound system, and I replaced the grungy covers with linen; a nice open weave so that the sound quality isn't affected. So though your iPod dock can fit in the palm of your hand, my sound system is way cooler.
Since it was used for a record player before, the inside didn't really work with my "modern" stereo; the top shelf sloped down, and was glued into place. I ended up cutting it out with my jigsaw, and replacing it with a level piece of wood. I also added some decorative trim to the front because hey, why not? When we first moved in, my roomie Rachel put on some Ella Fitzgerald, and my roommate Katie's boyfriend Jeremy said, "Hey, does that stereo only play music from when it was made?"
